Description

Central Pacific 4-6-0 reskins, version 1, by Daniel Gollery (Trainboi1 on RWA)
A minor upgrade of and addition to Smokebox's CPRR "Buffalo" DLC

In brief: This is a set of 5 reskins on Smokebox's Buffalo pack to represent all of the CP's Rogers-built 4-6-0s. It also includes a set of 20 quickdrive consists based on prototypical Central Pacific consists.

QD Requirements: Additionally to the "Buffalo" model from Steam required for the skins, the separately included Quickdrives pack requires UP 119, both 1860s rolling stock packs, and my CPRR flatcar reskins in order to work properly.

Real history: Freight service over Donner Pass always posed a problem for the CP, but never more so than in 1868, the year the line opened. That spring, a wide variety of brand new 4-6-0s arrived on the road, all of them designed to prove their builder's worth on the steepest section of the transcontinental railroad. Schenectady furnished numbers 56-59, McK&A numbers 68-71, Danforth numbers 72-75, Rhode Island numbers 88-92, and Rogers numbers 82-83 and 85-87. The Rogers order was split as one month prior, CP had ordered No. 84, the Gazelle, to see if Schenectady could replace McK&A as their main builder. Schenectady succeeded in this recard, but that meant that they fell behind on their 4-6-0 order, with No. 57, the Bison, failing to arrive until two months after the railroad was completed. As such, in the early days, the Rogers 4-6-0s proved among the most useful engines on Donner Pass, with a short overall wheelbase, and middling driver size and stroke allowing them to perform well regardless of their assignments. Photos indicate that the class spent most of their time based out of Rocklin, at the foot of the Sierras, while the smaller 4-6-0s in numbered in the 16-25 range handled the heavier grades near the summit.

Historical disclaimer: In addition to the margin for error associated with replicating engines that were gone by the early 20th century, there is a known error inherent in this model. The fuel railing present on the tender was an 1870s addition to these engines, by which time they had also received A. J. Stevens' distinctive spark arrestor design. I am informed that there is a way to render this railing invisible with the aid of scripting, but it's not enough of a problem for me to learn how to do so just yet.

Installation: First, unpack Assets\Smokebox\Buffalo\BuffaloAssets.ap. You can then install CP_Rogers_4-6-0_Reskins.rwp using Railworks Utilities.
Then, if you want to upgrade the textures on the original models, install CP_Rogers_4-6-0_Reskin_Replacers.rwp using Utilities.
To make the skins work, copy all of the .GeoPcDx files from the Assets\Smokebox\Buffalo\RailVehicles\Steam\Gorilla\Default\Engine folder to the adjacent folders named "82 86", "83 85", and "87".

For quickdrives, once the engines and my CPRR flatcar reskins are installed, install CP_Rogers_4-6-0_Quicdrives.rwp using Utilities.

Credits: Smokebox's help and support cannot be overstated. In addition to making the original pack, he pointed me to any places he wasn't sure if he'd gotten the paintwork right, which made it much easier for me to ensure these engines are as close as possible to reality.
Jim Wilke, Jon Davis, Kyle Wyatt, Andrew Brandon, Randy Hees, John Ott, and many others have worked together for years to publicize the information used in creating these skins. Their importance cannot be overstated in trying to do historically accurate Western representations of any kind. Additionally, Andrew Brandon provided me with the photos used to generate the new front pattern on the headlight face, which immeasurably helps bring the headlight to life.
